DAVIS (CBS13) — A teenager facing first-degree murder charges in the deaths of an elderly couple faced a judge for the first time on Wednesday.

Shackled and in a shirt and tie, showing little emotion, Daniel Marsh, 16, asked for a public defender, saying he couldn’t afford counsel.

He entered a not-guilty plea on Wednesday. He faces a maximum of two life sentences if he is convicted.

His appearance comes two days after his arrest in the deaths of Chip Northup and Claudia Maupin. The couple was found dead in their Davis home in April during a welfare check by police.

Family and friends of the murder suspect showed support for him during his court appearance.

Marsh first-degree murder charges with special circumstances relating to the alleged depravity of the crime, the fact the suspect was lying in wait and a claim of torture.
