Facebook: Canadian government agencies demanded information on 219 users earlier this year

Canadian government agents requested the Facebook information of 219 users over 192 total requests in the first six months of 2013, the social media giant said Tuesday.

The company complied in 44% of the cases. Facebook did not say which specific government agencies demanded the information but in the past has said many requests are for criminal investigations.

Government agents in 74 countries demanded information on about 38,000 Facebook users in the first half of this year, with about half the orders coming from authorities in the United States.

The social-networking giant is the latest technology company to release figures on how often governments seek information about its customers. Microsoft and Google have done the same.
