Mississippi Family Vanishes After Car Crash

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jackson Police on Monday found a wallet and other items linked to three members of a Jackson-area family reported missing after a car crash.

WLBT reports police found the items in a Dumpster at a Shell gas station in south Jackson just before noon.

Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones told WJTV that a car crashed near the town of Carpenter off Shelby Road in the western part of the county on Saturday. Three people — 30-year-old Atira Hughes Smith, her 7-year-old son Jaidon Hill and her husband 34-year-old Laterry Smith — were reported missing.

The vehicle the family was traveling in also has been recovered, the sheriff’s office said.

Police also searched the home of Laterry Smith’s mother, which is not far from where the items were found. A neighbor says the mother and Smith’s sisters moved out of the home Sunday night.
